Juvenile Justice and Child Safety: Understanding Accountability, Rehabilitation, and Prevention

When a young caregiver is accused after a child is harmed or dies, it is never just one story. It is the story of a grieving family, a frightened adolescent, and a community forced to confront what was missing long before the tragedy. Juvenile justice exists precisely because adolescents are still developing; they can cause devastating harm, yet also possess extraordinary capacity to change. Courts must weigh accountability with the science of adolescent development, the circumstances of caregiving, and the need to protect the public.

Real prevention does not begin in the courtroom. It begins with adults who prepare young caregivers, accessible mental health support, and communities that make it safe to ask for help before stress turns dangerous. It continues with responsible media that resists turning complex pain into simple outrage. When we remember that every case holds multiple vulnerable lives, our response can honor both justice and the possibility of a safer future.
